About Pamplona

Pamplona

Pamplona is a small medium-size city (population: 300,000). It has a local airport with direct daily flights to Madrid and Frankfurt (Germany). Very well connected by rapid trains (ALVIA) to Madrid, Barcelona and other cities. It is also close to the other four major Spanish cities: San Sebastián, Vitoria, Logroño, and Zaragoza.

In Pamplona, students will spend a semester at one of Spain’s prestigious universities, the University of Navarra (https://www.unav.edu/en/home). The University of Navarra is a private institution, number one overall in educational innovation and number three in Europe, after Oxford and Cambridge, in teaching quality (Times Higher Education Ranking 2019).

What to Expect

Academics

Academic Calendar perfectly matches US semester calendar: September-December (Fall), and January-May (Spring)

Academic environment: International students take classes with Spanish students. The Instituto de Lengua y Cultura Españolas (ILCE) is part of the College of Philosophy and Letters. International students interact daily with Spanish students and students from all over the world. See more information about the Instituto de Lengua y Cultura Españolas here:https://www.unav.edu/en/web/instituto-de-lengua-y-cultura-espanolas

Academic advising: Personalized attention to each student, including international students. All students are assigned an advisor for the semester. These advisors are full-time professors or lecturers who meet periodically with students to monitor their academic progress.

Academic friends: “Buddy system”. International students are assigned a Spanish student as a mentor for the semester to get together, have coffee, and help the international student adjust to living in a new country.

Academic Certification: Official Spanish Language Academic certification included at the end of the semester program.

International Academic Staff: Dynamic and innovative professors and lecturers from Spain, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and other Spanish-speaking countries. Several professors from ILCE hold PhDs from US institutions and have gained professional experience in the US higher education system for several years.

Innovative Academic Curricula: Inspired by the notion of Global Responsible Literacy, ILCE offers innovative courses on Spanish communication, culture, literature, business and cutting edge pedagogical initiatives: internships,service-learning courses, digital storytelling, creative writing courses... in Spanish and English.

Students will participate in the Spanish Club, an international student club led by Spanish students who organize cultural activities at no cost to international students: Café Internacional, Club de Lectura, Club de Cine, field trips organized in Pamplona...

Field Trips

Students will have the opportunity to participate in several field trips during the semester.
Some of the cities included in the excursions are San Sebastián, Barcelona, Olite, and Bilbao.
These trips might be subject to change depending on the curriculum followed by the semester program.

Living in Pamplona
In Pamplona, students will stay with host families. The program director of the Instituto de Lengua y Cultura Españolas at the University of Pamplona is in charge of placing students with host families, coordinating the orientation period and arranging extracurricular activities.
